Dodger catcher Russell Martin appeared shaken up after the 4th inning when he attempted to take out Orlando Hudson at second;
Martin was limping throughout the night as The Dodgers dropped the first game of an important series with the Diamondbacks Friday night. Diamondbacks starter Doug Davis “Thoroughly Shutdown” the Dodgers offensive attack as he went 8 innings and allowed 3 hits. Closer Jose Valverde then came in striking out 2 of 3 Dodger hitters to end it. The core hitters for the Dodgers, numbers 3 thru 6, were 1 for 13, that’s a .077 batting average.
On another note, Youngster Dewlyn Young made his first start this year in left field, he went hitless in 3 at-bats, striking out 2 times. Struggling Olmedo Saenz made a start at first base tonight, giving James Loney the night off; He went hitless in 3 at-bats as well. Before the game, Olmedo attributed his struggles to rust, coming from lack of playing time. Saenz, as Dodger fans know, has looked repulsive at the plate, making poor decisions and making weak contact.
But things aren’t all bad in Dodger land as young right-hander Chad Billingsley was impressive going a strong 7 2/3 innings. Billingsley made one mistake; He left a fastball up in the zone to Snyder and it was rocketed down the left field line into some fans with beers. Something that personally relieved some stress was watching Olmedo Saenz chase down a picked off Chris Young, the guy can still motor.
The Blue look to turn things around tomorrow night as they face the Diamondbacks at 7:10 pm.
