Quote:
White said Martin, as his body fills out, could be compared to Arizona pitcher Dan Haren.

"His arm action, his breaking ball, his athleticism -- in some ways he reminds me of Haren," said White.

Here's some info on Ethan Martin

Fastball: Martin threw his fastball in the 91-96 mph range. He maintained the velocity, throwing 94 mph in the seventh inning.

Fastball movement: He had hard, four-seamer life.

Curve: He showed a consistently plus curve, a power breaking ball in the 79-82 mph range, that he used as a strikeout pitch to lefties and righties.

Splitter: He showed flashes of a plus split-fingered fastball, up to 84 mph, that worked as an out pitch as well.

Control: He was solid-average all night, at times above-average, filling up the strike zone with three pitches. He can throw his fastball for strikes to both sides of the plate.

Poise: He is super competitive on the mound.

Physical Description: He is big, strong, projectable -- the prototypical power pitcher.

Medical Update: Healthy.

Strengths: He's a big, strong power pitcher with three above-average to plus offerings.

Weaknesses: New on the radar as a pitching prospect, there's no history to draw on. Scouts will need to see how he bounces back throughout the season to be convinced.

Summary: He went from an interesting two-way player to an upper-echelon pitching prospect in one start. Showing three above-average pitches he can throw for strikes as well as the ability to maintain mid-90s velocity deep into a game, Martin was sure to be one of the most closely watched prep pitchers in the Draft class. He jumped on the screen with that one start; if he keeps it going, he'll move quickly up the charts.

Keith Law on Martin:
Quote:
Martin is a two-way player. He came into the year as a potential first-rounder as a third baseman, but he didn't hit well at the beginning. He likes to pitch, and he shut down American Plantation H.S. (the team of prospects Eric Hosmer and Adrian Nieto) in February. He throws 91-95 mph. He has a chance to be an above-average bat at third base, and he obviously has a plus arm. I would be surprised if the Dodgers kept well at beginn. Likes to pitch. Shut down Hosmer and Nieto team in a feb. turn 91-95 off the mound. Chance to be an above abverage bat at third . Plus arm. Good athlete. Would be surprise if keep him as a pitcher because they tend to prefer guys with polish. He has arm strength, but not much polish as a pitcher.

Logan White on Martin:
Quote:
"He's too good an athlete, has too good a delivery and is a great makeup guy not to take him," said assistant general manager Logan White. "He was a position player until two years ago, so he's got a fresh arm. He's already got a plus-curveball and he throws 90-95 mph every time out. He's still filling out, so he projects to get better. We did a lot of research on him and he's healthy."

"His arm action, his breaking ball, his athleticism -- in some ways he reminds me of [Dan] Haren," said White.

Some tidbits on 2nd round pick Josh Lindblom

Quote:
The highest-drafted player from 2005 who still has yet to turn pro, Lindblom turned down $300,000 as a third-round pick of the Astros. After spending one year at Tennessee and two at Purdue, he'll likely go one round higher this June. Lindblom scuffled as a starter before the Boilermakers made him a reliever late in the season. Now that he no longer has to pace himself, Lindblom throws at 94-95 mph with heavy life as he goes full bore for one or two innings. His hard curveball has improved, and he has quickened his delivery as well. He also mixes in an occasional splitter. Lindblom throws strikes but works out of a higher arm slot, making his pitches easier to see and more hittable than they seemingly should be. He has a resilient arm and workhorse build at 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds, but his stuff has been so much more electric out of the pen, suggesting that is his best role as a pro.

Some info on 3rd round pick Kyle Russell. Apparently some people thought he was college's top home run hitter
