Duke Snider is the all time Dodger centerfielder, home run leader (389) and RBI king ( about 1275 or so). He is the only Dodger to hit 40 or more home runs a season five times in a row (1953-1957), was an All Star five times, and was voted Major League Player of the Year in 1955 by the Sporting News (I believe it was called then the Sid Mercer Award)
Duke's first hit was on Opening Day, 1947, the game where Jackie broke in. He got a pinch hit single and was soon sent down to St. Paul to play regularly. At Montreal in 1948 he was hitting 327-17-77 in early August when he was called up to the Dodgers and became their CF for the next nine and a half years.
He hit 292, 321, 277, 303, 336, 341, 309, 292 and 274 in those nine full seasons, and his homer totals were 23, 31, 29, 21, 42, 40, 42, *43, and 40. He hurt his knee in '57, had it operated on and was never the same player again. His 326 homers during the decade of the 1950's was tops among all Major League players.
Hope that helps. I didn't know this post existed until Darth brought it to my attention. Sorry I took so long to answer it. |

No MB, that is quite true. It is also true that in 1954 and, I believe, in 1955 he hit over 300 against lefthand pitching. The Dodgers seldom faced lefthanders when they played in Brooklyn in the late 40's and early and mid 50's because they had a strong righthanded hitting team the likes of Gil Hodges, Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Carl Furillo and Pee Wee Reese, all of those mentioned murdered lefthand pitching. |

I remember seeing an interview with Furillo who said Snider would get upset whenever he had to face a LHP. Snider only hit 8% of his HR's vs LHP. That's the LOWEST percentage for any left-handed slugger in history with 300+ HR.
Ted Williams was the next-lowest at 12.3% of his HR against lefties. In contrast, Ruth and Reggie Jackson both hit 30% of their HR against LHP; Gehrig hit 29%.
I bet most people don't know that he finished his career with the Giants. |

That is some pretty damn good research on your part MB; I am quite impressed. It did not know that about Snider, that is, the lowest percentages against LH pitchers. Thanks for the info.
I was at Dodger Stadium May 1 and 2, 1964 when Snider played his first two games against the Dodgers. Don Drysdale stopped him cold the first night, striking him out two or three times in a 7-1 Dodgers win, but the next night, trailing 3-1 in the top of the ninth, Duke hit a two run homer off Joe Moeller to tie a game that the Giants won in extra innings. It was the closest Moeller ever came to beating the Giants, and the Friscans won the season series that year 12-6, with Drysdale getting four of the Dodger wins by going 4-1 against his hated rivals. His only loss was a 1-0 game when the Dodgers failed to score in the ninth after getting the bases loaded and no outs. |
