Now that they are offering Hughes and Melky Cabrera, the pressure is on the Sox to put Lester and Ellsbury in their package. Whatever the Yanks do they should not include Robi Cano, he is a future Mvp.

from prosportsdaily.com:
Quote:
"Andy Pettitte, who contemplated retirement this winter, has told his good friends, a few former Astros teammates and some current Yankees teammates that he will return to the Bronx for the 2008 season."

also, regarding Santana moving to the Yankees:

Quote:
"Today is the day. Either the Twins will trade Johan Santana to the Yankees, or the Yanks are pledging to withdraw from the negotiations. Hank Steinbrenner told The Post last night that the Yankees have made their best offer to the Twins and Minnesota must decide today if it is going to send the two-time Cy Young winner to The Bronx in a deal for Phil Hughes, Melky Cabrera and a mid-level minor leaguer. Hughes, Kennedy and Joba are the future. I'd keep them over Johan. Not making this trade would make their pitching much deeper than last year, for sure. Making a push for Bedard would help, too.

That is a formidable rotation. Did you hear that, Boston? Formidable. Do you know what that word means? Look it up.

Yeah, that's a nice rotation.

Good question

Yanks Tigers
Jeter Granderson
Cano Polanco
Rodriguez Ordonez
Matsui Cabrera
Posada Rodriguez
Cabrera Sheffiled
Damon Inge
Giambi Jones

I think its even, but Robi Cano will be the difference maker im predicting .325avg 25 hr 100rbi, dude is gonna be a superstar.

Could Matsui be on the market?

Some Japanese reporters asked Brian Cashman if Hideki Matsui could be traded and he gave them a “no comment.”

There was a time such a question would have been dismissed. But Matsui is signed to a reasonable contract ($26 million over the next two seasons) and the Yankees could get creative with him. They can use Johnny Damon in left and the Big G as the DH.

The Giants, who are desperate for offense, are reportedly interested. It would probably take Matsui and something else (a prospect) to bring back one of their starters. Matsui isn’t getting Tim Lincecum. But could he be part of a larger trade that would include Matt Cain or Noah Lowry and relievers?

Matsui has a NTC but has said he would waive it if asked.

Rivera, Yankees finalize deal

Quote:
NEW YORK - Mariano Rivera and the New York Yankees made it official Monday, finalizing a $45 million, three-year contract that will keep the ace closer in pinstripes.

Rivera became a free agent after the season, then told the team last month he would accept their offer. It took a little time to complete the paperwork and a physical.

The 38-year-old reliever signed with the Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1990 and has only played for them in pro ball. He is third on the career saves list with 443 and his postseason brilliance was perhaps the key to the Yankees winning four World Series from 1996-2000.

Rivera was 3-4 with 30 saves in 34 chances and a 3.15 ERA this season. He is coming off a three-year, $31.5 million contract. His new contract will provide an average salary more than $4 million above what any other reliever currently makes.

Rivera had hoped for an extension before the start of this season. The Yankees did not want to discuss extensions with any of their players until after the season ended.

At the start of spring training, Rivera said he would try the market if he became a free agent.

"Everybody has the same shot," he said then. "The Yankees will not have an advantage."

By keeping Rivera, the Yankees can go ahead with their plan to put Joba Chamberlain in the starting rotation. A rookie last season, Chamberlain quickly impressed the Yankees and earned his way into a spot as Rivera's primary setup man.

Yankees sign 2B Robinson Cano to a four-year contract with club options for 2012 and 2013

Quote:
The New York Yankees announced today that they have signed All-Star second baseman Robinson Cano to a four-year contract with two one-year club options, avoiding arbitration. Should the club exercise both options, the contract would extend through the 2013 season.
Cano, 25, batted .306 (189-for-617) in 2007, establishing career highs in hits, at-bats, games played (160), runs scored (93), triples (7), home runs (19), RBI (97) and walks (39). He also tied his career high with 41 doubles. Cano's 97 RBI led all American League second basemen and was the second-highest total by a Yankees second baseman in the last 50 years. He also had a .328 batting average against left-handed pitchers (63-for-192), ranking second among all AL left-handed hitters.

Over the last two seasons (2006-07), Cano ranks first among AL second basemen in hits (344), doubles (81) and RBI (171) and second in home runs (32) at the position. His .330 road batting average since his debut in 2005 is the third highest in the AL over the three-year span.

Cano has played more games at second base (408) than any other left-handed batter in franchise history, and his .981 career fielding percentage ranks fourth all time among Yankees second basemen. In 2007, he led Major League second basemen with 830 total chances and 136 double plays.

Signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on January 5, 2001, Cano was the runner-up in 2005 American League "Rookie of the Year" voting. In 2006, he was selected to the American League All-Star team.

Chamberlain hits 101 on Yankee Stadium radar gun
Joba Chamberlain

The first pitch , a 77-mph curve, caught Tampa's Willy Aybar off guard. But it was the second, a 101-mph heater, that had Aybar believing he had no chance. And when Joba Chamberlain finished him off with an 85-mph slider, it hardly seemed fair as Aybar was gone on three pitches the New York Daily News reported.

Five pitches later, when Shawn Riggans lined into an inning-ending double play to close out the Tampa half of the seventh, Chamberlain had added to his growing legend by saving the Yankees from a first-and-third, none-out quagmire.

He then recorded three straight outs in the eighth before stepping aside for Mariano Rivera, who closed out the Yankees' 2-0 victory yesterday at the Stadium.
