This year celebrates 50 years the big Blue has been in Los Angeles. I have to admit, sometimes I took them for granted. Growing up in the 80’s, I assumed the Dodgers were winners. I would skip years going to games sometimes. Even lost touch with the entire sport all together. I kept thinking, “I’ll go to a game next year”, “A couple more years… we will be back in the hunt”. The Dodgers were as synonymous to Los Angeles as Los Angeles was to winning. Look at us now, 19 years later we have one playoff win more than the last time we won it all.
We’ve been through alot together. Numerous rookies of the year. A few different owners. Countless players. A couple venues. One thing besides the colors and Vinny, have remained constant this half century. The name in front of the jerseys (okay granted it was gone for a bit, noone’s perfect), the words Los Angeles. Whether it was losing, winning, being family owned or run by a corporation. This team has always been an Angeleno. Proud to be who it is. Other teams were winning championships, stealing our players and it even has a step-brother trying to take it’s room. The Blue kept being who it was. A team that continues to fill the seats. A team with rich with tradition. A team with a great farm system. A team with loyal followers and members alike. The Dodgers are as much a part of L.A. as the Capitol records building. As much as the Hollywood sign. As much as well… the Lakers.
I just felt the need to say thanks. Thanks for not going anywhere. Thanks for still being right where I left you. Thanks for giving me the chance to give the same type of memories to my kids as I had growing up. Thanks for never giving up on me. Thanks for being the Los Angeles Dodgers. Happy 50th!
